For a startup, it can be difficult to know how to best reach your target audience. Making your mark and cutting through the information we are all inundated with on a daily basis is an ongoing challenge.
You undoubtedly know that you need a strong online presence to attract potential customers, pique their interest in your services and/or products, and successfully convert “This looks pretty good” to “I’m convinced!”
You may already have a website with all the bells and whistles, but it’s no use if nobody can find you among the hundreds and thousands of other businesses vying for customers. To achieve your marketing goals and attract customers that keep coming back, you seriously need to consider starting—and maintaining—a blog, and here’s why:
1. A regular blog = fresh content = boost in search engine rankings
Ok, it’s not quite that simple, but neglecting your blog for weeks or months on end is akin to not tending to your beloved vegetable patch. The plants that were steadily growing and gaining strength quickly become wilted and unattractive. But, with a bit of planning and ongoing maintenance, your blog can be the crowning glory of your site and can keep readers coming back for more.
2. Build customer trust
Having a platform to reach out to your customer base with information that provides solutions to their problems is key. Gone are the days of the dreaded used car salesman techniques. What potential customers want is useful content that doesn’t come across as too “salesy.” One of the best ways to meet this need is via a blog that is focused on the needs of the reader.
At the end of the day, people tend to base their decision-making on trust. If they trust your business and value the information you’re providing, they’re more likely to buy from you. View your blog as a worthwhile investment that will pay dividends.
3. A marketing no-brainer
Starting a blog is a simple, cheap and effective marketing tool. There are some excellent blog-hosting sites (many are free), and plugins such as Yoast SEO are invaluable if you need guidance on how to optimise your blog posts and improve those ever-important search engine rankings.
A word of warning: However easy to add a blog to your online toolkit, you need to ensure the content is well-planned, relevant, compelling and, of course, error-free. Without quality writing and an underpinning content strategy, all your blogging efforts may be for nothing.
4. Increase your social media presence
On its own, a blog can be effective in reaching your audience. But, to make a real impact, make use of social media. Give your posts a mention on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Whichever platform you use, strike up a discussion using your post. This is where an eye-catching title comes into play. Not click-bait style, but a title that is intriguing and different enough to get clicks. If you want some great tips, read HubSpot’s post on how to write irresistible blog titles.
Don’t forget to add sharing buttons so readers can send favourite posts to their own networks. You can even set up automatic social media posting using tools such as Hootsuite so that each time you publish a post, it also gets published to one or more of your social media accounts.
